PAWS HAND DELIVERED

PHD is a group of individuals who have remained committed to sharing the love of their dogs with those who for reasons beyond their control, can no longer have a dog of their own.  For these people with their stories, their smiles and their tears, we continue to visit and share that love and comfort our dogs have to give.

Paws Hand Delivered began in 1995 with just four therapy teams.  At present, there are over twenty therapy dog teams in the community.  Paws Hand Delivered is a group of individuals who have remained committed to sharing the love of their dogs with those who for reasons beyond their control, can no longer have a dog of their own.  We continue to visit and share the love and comfort our dogs have to give.  Our vision is to have enough qualified therapy teams to never have to deny a facility requesting visits for lack of an available team.

2011 New Therapy Dog Programs

During 2011, the local Paws Hand Delivered therapy group has expanded the program to include partnerships with both the Meadville Library and the Crawford Central School District.

During the summer of 2011, several of the therapy dogs were involved in our new program “Tales that Wag”.  The Tales that Wag program is designed to help elementary aged children work on their reading skills during the summer months.  Each Monday and Tuesday morning from   10:00 - 11:00 am, therapy dogs arrived at the Meadville library and were met by enthusiastic kids wanting to read to the dogs.  Each child spent anywhere from 5-15 minutes reading a book to the very patient therapy dog. The program during the school year has moved to a Saturday morning.  Several of the therapy dog teams are planning to start reading programs in their own community libraries.

Another successful program with the therapy dogs has been visitations with the special needs students in the Crawford Central School District.  With the help of Mitch Price, Director of Special Education, the program was initiated during the summer school program for special needs students.  Most of the students during the summer were of elementary age.  The program this fall will include senior high special needs, autistic, and life skills students  and will also again involve the elementary students as well.

Both of these programs have given the therapy dog program a chance to expand beyond the nursing home, hospital, and OWI visitations.
